Why I love reading AT
Found at one of ther threads at Apartmenttherapy:

"i have to admit, though, that i am not a capitalist. i hate the fact that economic class structures exist in this country (and worldwide). i hate the fact that we can sit here talking about how a $700,000 home is "a bargain", and designer furniture is "an accesible splurge", while people all over the world starve. or to bring it on topic, while most americans rent nondescript white boxes and shop at walmart, of necessity.

i will disparage the well-off on all counts. most of all, though, for employing transparent and banal status-symbol decorating gimmicks. i mean, if you have the money and want to reward yourself for your hard work, fine. but if what that means is putting a huge flatscreen TV over the fireplace in the formal parlor you never use in your 4-story brownstone you occupy alone, i'm sorry, but that's wasteful, offensive, and bordering on immoral. and i'm going to call that as i see it."

I have now finished reading the whole thread, and though the opoponax comment you cite makes sense out of context, it made less and less sense as the discussion progressed. According to opo's worldview, every single one of us can be classified as a damn capitalist. I don't see how, for example, a resident of a poor Moldovan village can afford any rent in the Bay Area. Heck, I can't imagine myself, 5 years ago, being able to own 1,000 books - and it's not the cost of the books themselves, since most of them came free; but the sum I paid to move those books from one apartment to another could undoubtedly provide sustenance to a small Moldovan family. When I came to this country, I called myself "burzhujka" - so shocked I was to be able to own more than 2 pairs of jeans. So? What exactly does this prove? The guy, David, originally bought a house for 260,000$. Yes, that is more than most people in most countries would ever see in their lives, but that is quite a humble sum of money in American terms, and probably the mortgage payments would cost less than his rent. He borrowed furniture from friends for the shot. Unless the whole idea of a multi-story house is offensive to one's sensibilities, I don't see how David's behavior was class-oriented. Well, scrape that - of course, one could claim that having the education to recognize a financial opportunity is classist. But what exactly is the correct Marxist response to that? Pass by opportunities just because not everybody is able to see them?

On the other hand, I agree that AT was way better when they only concentrated on small, rented apartments. When I open their craigslist ad links and see a 300$ piece of furniture, I cringe.

You're back! I started to worry; have you moved? All is in one piece?

I posted the quote to illustrate the stupidity of anti-capitalist sentiment. She doesn't stop to think, what would happen if her concept wins and everyone will lead "simple life" without any significant material reward for their pains; does she think people will be stimulated to function? She might find then there are others who think her "modest" ideal is too luxurious, and will expropriate her - there is no limit to expropriation.
The need to bring everyone down to the same grey level - this is so familiar, so socialist.
But let us not bother talking about this madness anymore.

You promised to write to me with your new address - please do.

Yes, I moved - and even though I put much effort into moving (and nesting), the baby still hadn't made his appearance :) The bottomline is that we have way too many books for a peaceful move. We're still unpacking.

He obviously likes you and comfortable with his quarters. One example of being content with little!

Glad you're OK. Little domesticity is nice; in 3 weeks you'd thank your lucky stars you had some time to unpack the books before more important matters happen.

Don't watch TV much and don't read blogs; not very beneficial for the baby.

I don't watch TV at all; blog browsing is a different matter. I try to keep up with the events in Israel, which invariably raise my blood pressure. Luckily, I have low blood pressure to begin with.
